Sen. Oluremi Tinubu Declares Special Seats for Women Session Opened in Abuja
Abuja, July 9, 2025 — Honourable Kafilat Adetola Ogbara, Member of the Federal House of Representatives and Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, on Wednesday officially represented the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the 2025 National Assembly Open Week.

Themed around the critical issue of “Special Seats for Women in Parliament”, the session was held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, drawing a distinguished audience including female Deputy Governors, First Ladies, lawmakers, civil society advocates, international partners, and members of the diplomatic corps. The event formed part of ongoing constitutional reform dialogues, with a sharp focus on expanding women’s political participation through legislative inclusion.

Delivering the First Lady’s address, Hon. Ogbara emphasized the importance of ensuring that women’s voices are not just heard but are firmly represented at all levels of government. She described the occasion as both “timely and necessary,” noting that despite making up nearly half of Nigeria’s population, women remain grossly underrepresented in governance structures.

“Giving women a seat at the table is not about charity,” the First Lady’s message read. “It is about recognizing competence, diversity of experience, and the unique perspectives women bring to leadership.”

Hon. Ogbara reinforced the message by commending the leadership of the 10th National Assembly—particularly Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, GCON—for initiating inclusive conversations around special legislative seats for women. She applauded the contributions of women’s groups, civil society organizations, and male allies who continue to champion gender equity across political platforms.

Speaking with conviction, Hon. Ogbara urged fellow lawmakers and policy influencers to “approach this issue with open minds and patriotic hearts,” stressing that true progress would only be achieved when policies reflect the actual demographic and developmental realities of Nigeria.

The First Lady’s address, as conveyed by Hon. Ogbara, concluded with a powerful call to action:

“Let us make history by enshrining representation that reflects the strength and diversity of Nigeria.”

As she officially declared the session open on behalf of Her Excellency, Hon. Ogbara reaffirmed her personal commitment to supporting legislative reforms that empower women through education, economic opportunity, political inclusion, and national development.

This landmark event marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution and strengthens the national call for constitutional amendments to guarantee special legislative seats for women, with the potential to reshape the nation’s political future for generations to come.
