The Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Kafilat Adetola Ogbara, has issued a strong condemnation of the alleged “Ozoro Rape Festival” in Delta State, describing it as a gross violation of human rights and dignity.

In a press statement released toda, Hon. Ogbara expressed grave concern over reports of sexual assault and harassment linked to the festival, stressing that such acts stand in clear contravention of Nigerian law. She emphasized that “there can be no cultural, traditional, or social justification for actions that undermine the safety and dignity of any individual.”

The lawmaker called on the Inspector General of Police and other relevant agencies to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation, ensuring that all perpetrators, collaborators, and organizers are prosecuted. She noted that the acts constitute direct violations of the **Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act)**, which criminalizes rape, sexual harassment, and harmful traditional practices.

Hon. Ogbara further urged community leaders, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations to cooperate with authorities and take a firm stand against practices that endanger women and girls. “Culture should be a source of pride, not oppression,” she stated, insisting that festivals must celebrate heritage without violating human rights.

The House Committee pledged to intensify efforts to strengthen enforcement of the VAPP Act, expand awareness campaigns, and ensure survivors of gender-based violence receive confidential support, medical care, and counseling. Hon. Ogbara reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to advancing policies that protect women, promote justice, and uphold accountability across the country.

Importantly, she linked this stance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent declaration of 2026 as the ‘Year of Families and Social Development’, noting that the protection of women and the strengthening of family values must remain central to Nigeria’s national development strategy.

She concluded by calling on Nigerians to collectively reaffirm national values of dignity, equity, and respect for human life.
